Early this morning, Ren crawled in bed with me, not something he does every night...anymore. I looked at the clock and thought of early Thanksgiving mornings a few decades ago years ago when my mother was already out of bed to get the turkey in the oven. By the time the rest of the family woke a couple hours later, the house would be filled with the aroma of roasting turkey. And just a few more hours after that, around the formal dining table set with my mother’s finest china and silver, we would all take turns stating what we were most thankful for. Then we would dive into a very traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

a super conflict

We all saw it, but Ren saw it first. He stood on his chair in the restaurant and pointed, “Mommy look.” When I first saw it, I smiled, but then I realized that this could mean trouble. I looked across the table at Brently and nodded to the young couple a few tables away from us. That’s when he turned around and saw it, too.
    “Someone really should say something to them,” he announced.

a little piece of paradise

On the way home from a really busy morning, I broke all our well-established and fully-embraced food rules. I stopped at a Taco Bell and ordered two Frito Burritos for Ren. Yes, Frito Burritos, filled with seasoned ground beef, cilantro rice, warm nacho cheese sauce, and original Fritos corn chips, wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. There is nothing natural or organic about it.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel like hot dogs

It was supposed to be the storm of the year, a blizzard of epic proportions—18” of snow starting early Monday morning and lasting through Tuesday afternoon—added to the already 8” of snow we got the day before. We thought we would be snowed in through Wednesday. I had just gone grocery shopping on Friday, but with the impending storm, I wanted to make sure I had those last couple items I forgot, like dishwasher soap and spring roll wrappers—you never know when cabin fever will produce a Chinese food craving.
